Rewind and fork

Go back to before a prompt with the files and the conversation, or branch a chat into a new one to try another direction.

Three ways to go back, from the smallest to the largest:

You want to Use
Undo one part of one edit Revert on a hunk inside a tool call (see the transcript)
Put the files back to before a prompt, and keep talking in this chat Revert tree to a turn in the Checkpoints tab
Put the files and the conversation back to before a prompt Rewind to here

And one way to branch without undoing anything: Fork this chat.

Rewind to a prompt

Rewinding puts every file this chat wrote back to how it was before the prompt you pick, and continues the conversation from that point in a new chat.

  1. Make sure the chat is not mid-turn. Let it finish, or stop it with Escape.
  2. Hover the prompt you want to go back to, and click Rewind to here.
  3. If any changed files need a decision, Tori asks first (see below).
  4. Confirm Rewind to before this turn? with Rewind.

What happens next:

  • Every file this chat wrote, from that prompt on, goes back to how it was. The current state is saved as a checkpoint first, so the rewind itself can be undone from the Checkpoints tab.
  • The chat’s tab is replaced by a new chat whose transcript ends just before the prompt you picked. A banner on it says Rewound. The files and the conversation above are back to this point, but the agent still remembers the turns that were undone.
  • The composer is filled with a note for the agent, telling it the files were rewound and to read a file before changing it. It is a draft, not sent: add what you want to do differently, then send it, or edit the note.

The original conversation is not deleted. It is still in the session history with all its turns.

The agent still remembers

The new chat carries the whole original conversation in the agent’s memory, including the turns you undid. It knows the files went back, because the note says so, but it remembers the approach it took. If you want a clean slate, start a new chat instead.

Files that need a decision

Before anything is written, Tori checks every file the rewind would touch:

  • Files also written by another chat in the same worktree. Rewinding them would undo that chat’s work too. You are asked N files also written by another chat, and only if you choose Rewind these too are they included. Otherwise they are left as they are.
  • Files nothing claims, usually changed by a shell command, which Tori cannot attribute to a session. You are told N files will be left alone and can continue with Rewind the rest, or cancel.

A rewind only ever puts back what this chat recorded writing, so a different chat’s work in the same folder is safe unless you say otherwise.

When you cannot rewind

  • Mid-turn: This chat is mid-turn. Let it finish or interrupt it, then rewind.
  • Agents other than Claude: rewinding needs Tori to fork the conversation and cut its replay at the turn. Some of those agents can fork (Tori uses that to ask a session why), but cutting the replay is not built for them. The button is not shown. Their turns can still be put back from the Checkpoints tab, which leaves the conversation as it is.
  • Chats the Autopilot is driving: This chat can’t be rewound.
  • With checkpoints turned off: rewinding needs the snapshot taken at each prompt. Turn on Snapshot on each prompt in Settings > Chat.

Revert the files and keep talking

To put the files back without touching the conversation, use the Checkpoints tab in the Changes panel. Pick the turn and click Revert tree to its time. The chat carries on as if nothing happened, so tell the agent what you did. Rewind chat to here in the same place does the full rewind above.

See Checkpoints for the details.

Fork a chat

Forking copies the conversation so far into a new chat, without changing any files. Use it to try a second approach while keeping the first one to come back to.

  1. Open the session menu, the … at the end of the status strip.
  2. Click Fork this chat.
  3. A new chat opens beside it on the same agent and account, with the whole conversation up to now.

Both chats work in the same folder, so their edits land on the same files. To keep two attempts apart on disk, give each its own worktree, or use fan out into several attempts.

Fork this chat only appears once the chat has history, and only on agents that can fork, which today is Claude.
